Sandy Lake, a small but historically significant community, boasts a rich heritage dating back over 150 years. Founded by Alexander Brown, who led a group of settlers through dense forests, they established their settlement near a rapid stream. In 1849, his son Thomas Brown surveyed and named the town Brownsville. However, in 1868, due to postal conflicts with another Brownsville in Pennsylvania, the town's name was changed to Sandy Lake. The town is named after the picturesque Sandy Lake, located to the west, with portions of it lying within the borough and the remainder in Lake Township.

Today, Sandy Lake is recognized as a distinctive and historically rich community in Pennsylvania. Despite its modest size, the area's underground aquifers present unique challenges, including issues with iron water, hard water, and the impacts of mining activities. As a result, the community relies on Chatfield Drilling for comprehensive water well services, ensuring that residents have access to clean, safe water through professional treatment and maintenance solutions.
